One of the things that we learned on the first day of this class was that Rhetoric is the art of persuasion. It uses language to convey a message and influence others. We are using rhetoric to persuade and motivate others. For example, when the professor of this course talks to the class, he tries to convince us that what he is saying is true and persuades us to learn something new about rhetoric. The question here, though, is why rhetoric is important. Rhetoric is critical because it is a practical, symbolic expression essential for thinking skills and effective communication. Everything we do is rhetoric. When we talk on the phone, answer questions in class, or even write this paper, we do rhetoric. Rhetoric is essential for me when I ride horses. I am communicating to the horse what I want him to do. I am effectively talking to him. Another reason rhetoric is essential for me is because of my future career as a lawyer or judge. To be a lawyer, how I am a persuasive communicator will play a significant role in whether I am successful or not at winning a case. As a lawyer, I must persuade the jury that someone is guilty or not guilty and why to go my way. Persuasion is highly valued; it helps influence and inspire others. Rhetoric will remain vital because practical symbolic expression is necessary for a good conversation.
